In a decisive electoral victory that saw significant engagement from Ghana’s medical fraternity, Professor Ernest Yorke has been elected the new President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).
The results, declared late Saturday, November 15, 2025, confirmed a leadership transition at the helm of the nation’s premier medical professional body.
Prof. Yorke successfully defeated his closest contender, Dr. Justice Yankson, in a national ballot conducted electronically.
The election saw Prof. Yorke secure a clear mandate, capturing more than half of the total valid votes cast. The final figures, announced by the Chairperson of the GMA Electoral Committee, Dr. Aija Larsen-Reindorf, were as follows:
- Prof. Ernest Yorke: 1,857 votes
- Percentage of Valid Votes: 53.6 per cent
The victory underscores strong support for Prof. Yorke’s vision among the GMA membership, positioning him to lead the Association’s negotiations, policy advocacy, and professional development agenda in the coming years.
Prof. Yorke, an accomplished academic, educator, and passionate health advocate, brings decades of dedicated service within the Association’s ranks to the presidential office.
His leadership journey through the GMA hierarchy includes significant roles where he focused on internal governance and member welfare:
- Junior Doctors’ Representative Council member
- Divisional Secretary
- Divisional Vice Chair
- Member of the GMA Council
His ascension to the presidency is viewed as the culmination of a systematic involvement in GMA governance, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing Ghanaian doctors, from specialist training and facility upgrades to remuneration and healthcare policy implementation.
His new role is critical in influencing national health policy, especially regarding specialist training, public health preparedness, and the ongoing relationship between the GMA and the Ministry of Health.
