NIA refers extortion allegations to internal CID for probe

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has responded to a viral TikTok video in which an individual known as “Sefwi Biggest Trapper” alleged that some NIA officers extorted money from him and others at the Bono Premium Centre.

In a public notice issued on Sunday, November 16, 2025, the NIA expressed concern over the video and strongly condemned the conduct of the individual involved.

According to the Authority, his unruly behaviour at the Bono Premium Centre on November 11 caused significant disruption and posed risks to other applicants present at the facility.

Despite this, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, and the Management of the Authority reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance on extortion and misconduct by staff.

The NIA outlined several actions taken so far to address the allegations. Attempts have been made to contact both the individual making the claims and his companion, identified as Ms. Appiah Comfort, to assist with ongoing inquiries, but all efforts have been unsuccessful. The matter has since been referred to the NIA’s Internal CID for a full and independent investigation.

Management has also begun implementing additional measures to strengthen security across all NIA operational centres to ensure the safety of staff and applicants.

The Authority urged the individual behind the video to provide any evidence he claims to have, adding that appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken against any officer found culpable.

The NIA further used the opportunity to clarify the approved fees for services at its Premium Centres versus District Offices. At Premium Centres, first-time registration costs GHS 310, personal information updates cost GHS 355, and replacement of lost or damaged cards costs GHS 420. At District Offices, first-time registration remains free, personal information updates cost GHS 60, and card replacement costs GHS 125.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery, the NIA encouraged the public to report genuine concerns through its official phone lines or via email at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
