Ghana international Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery after sustaining a severe injury during the Black Stars’ international friendly against Japan on Friday in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

The Toulouse midfielder suffered a double leg fracture in the second half of Ghana’s 2-0 defeat and was stretchered off the pitch in visible pain, sparking concern across the football community.

The 24-year-old has now completed surgery in Japan as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process. In an official statement, the Ghana Football Association confirmed the positive outcome of the procedure and outlined the support structures already in place for the player’s recovery.

“Following the incident during the game between Ghana and Japan, where Abu Francis suffered a fracture of two bones, the Ghana Football Association, through the efforts of Dr. Prince Pambo, Black Stars head of medical, his colleagues from Toulouse FC, and the surgical team in Japan, is happy to inform the public that Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery, and the acute phase of his rehabilitation has commenced,” the statement read.

The GFA further revealed that a physiotherapist will remain with Abu to provide intensive rehabilitation support during the initial phase of his recovery. Additionally, arrangements are being made for a senior member of the technical team to accompany him back to France after his discharge from the Toyota Memorial Hospital, where the surgery was performed.

“The Ghana Football Association is grateful to everyone who supported us in this journey,” the statement continued. “We are particularly grateful to the Black Stars management and the technical team for their support during these last few days and will continue to count on their support during the rehabilitation process in our quest to ensure that the player returns to full fitness.”

Francis Abu, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s bright midfield prospects, will now focus on recovery, with both club and country keen to see him return stronger in the months ahead.
