The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has established a Board of Inquiry to investigate a deadly stampede during its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, 12 November 2025.
The incident resulted in six deaths and 28 injuries, prompting the temporary suspension of the exercise in the Greater Accra Region to allow for safety reviews and enhanced crowd management measures.
Preliminary reports indicate that the stampede was caused by an unexpected surge of applicants breaching security barriers ahead of the scheduled screening, leading to people collapsing and being trampled.
President John D. Mahama visited the injured at the 37 Military Hospital and directed a full investigation into the tragedy. The GAF expressed deep regret over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities assured the public that medical teams were attending to the victims and that new measures would be introduced to prevent future occurrences, with applicants to be informed of the resumption date in due course.
