It is an insult to have Nkrumah’s face with that of the 5 others on cedi notes – Anokye Frimpong

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong has indicated that one of the things that saddens him in Ghana is the people whom the country has chosen to honour by putting their images on its currency notes.

Speaking in a recent interview on Angel FM, Anokye Frimpong asserted that, unlike other countries where each currency note is used to honour those who have done so well for the country and are unmatched in their fields, almost all of Ghana’s currency notes have the faces of the so-called ‘Big Six’.

He added that what makes things worse is the fact that the image of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, is on the notes together with that of five other men.

He said that putting the image of Nkrumah alongside those of the five other people means they are equals, but this is far from the truth.

He asserted that the image of the first President of Ghana should not be on the same notes with the five other people because they cannot be compared to him.

“If I take our currency notes and I look at them, I become very angry… Putting these six people on the notes means that you are saying they are co-equals. Please, none of the five other people can be compared to Nkrumah.

“Even if Nkrumah’s head is cut off, none of those people can be compared to him. It is an insult to the history of this country to add the images of these five people to that of Kwame Nkrumah to show that they are equals,” he said.

The historian also said that the fact that the Ghana cedi notes do not have the images of great patriots like Raphael Grey Ametor, the first African to be nominated for the Nobel Prize, and Professor Anton William Amo, the first black person to be educated, breaks his heart.
