President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Ghanaian media to play a crucial role in safeguarding national peace and cohesion as the country approaches the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA–KGL) National Awards held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday, November 8, President Mahama emphasised the need for responsible journalism and constructive public discourse to prevent tension and conflict during the election period.
He urged media practitioners to avoid hate speech, inflammatory commentary, and unverified reports that could undermine national stability.
“As we move toward another election season [2028], the media’s role in preserving peace and cohesion cannot be overstated. Let us shun hate speech, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and verify before we broadcast,” President Mahama said.
He stressed that freedom of speech should not be misused to create division among citizens. “Freedom of speech is not the right to sow division,” he cautioned.
The President also highlighted the ongoing National Dialogue on Peace and Security, which brings together media professionals and faith-based leaders to promote responsible communication and identify early warning signs of conflict.
“Peace is not the absence of noise—it’s the harmony of hearts. The media must serve as the rhythm that sustains that harmony,” President Mahama added, urging journalists to uphold ethical reporting and use their platforms to unite rather than divide the nation.
