Police foil armed robbery on Wa–Nyoli highway

The Upper West Regional Police Command on Thursday, November 6, 2025 successfully foiled an attempted highway robbery on the Wa–Nyoli Road averting what could have been a tragic attack on unsuspecting travellers.

According to a statement issued by the Command and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Francis Yiribaare, the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. between the Kongolmo and Tanina communities, when four armed men emerged from surrounding vegetation and opened fire on two SsangYong mini vans en route to Wa.

The statement indicated that the robbers forced the two vehicles off the main road and diverted them toward a nearby bush in an attempt to rob the passengers. However, a police patrol team, which was monitoring the highway as part of its routine security operations, quickly responded to the sound of gunfire.

“Upon hearing the gunshots, the patrol team advanced swiftly to the scene and came under sporadic fire from the assailants,” the statement said.

“Exercising precision and professionalism, the team returned fire, forcing the robbers to flee into the bush. No casualties were recorded during the exchange.”

The Regional Police Command commended the officers involved in the operation for their bravery and swift response, noting that the success reflects the effectiveness of its enhanced rapid response strategy, which has been implemented along major highways identified as robbery-prone.

The police stated that drivers and transport operators should strictly adhere to escort procedures, especially when travelling at night or on vulnerable routes, explaining that such security arrangements were designed to ensure their safety.

“The Command assures the public of its continuous commitment to ensuring safety and security for all residents and travellers in the Upper West Region,” DCOP Yiribaare stated.

He further urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and sharing timely information that could help in the prevention of such crimes.

In recent months, the Upper West Regional Police Command has intensified night patrols and intelligence-led operations across several highways following public concerns over sporadic highway robbery incidents.

The successful intervention on the Wa–Nyoli road adds to a growing list of thwarted criminal activities attributed to the Command’s proactive approach and improved operational coordination.
