Ghanaian highlife legend Ofori Amponsah has ignited widespread debate after revealing that, although he was born into a family deeply rooted in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he no longer associates himself with any political group. The award-winning musician made it clear that his decision to remain neutral stems from years of reflection and a desire to maintain independence in a country where politics often divides rather than unites.
Speaking in a recent interview, Ofori Amponsah explained that his upbringing in a strongly pro-NPP environment shaped his early political understanding. However, as he grew older and more exposed to national issues, he began to question partisan loyalty and its influence on critical thinking. He noted that true patriotism, in his view, means assessing leadership based on integrity, performance, and genuine commitment to national progress — not blind party allegiance.
“I was born into the NPP tradition,” Ofori Amponsah stated, “but at this stage of my life, I prefer to stay neutral. I don’t want to be tied to any political colour. I want to support what is right and criticize what is wrong, no matter who is in power.”
In a particularly surprising revelation, the “Otoolege” hitmaker admitted that if former President John Dramani Mahama were to contest again, he would have voted for him. He explained that Mahama’s leadership style, his focus on infrastructure, and his empathy toward ordinary Ghanaians had left a positive impression on him. “If Mahama was contesting again, I would have voted for him,” he said, adding that his admiration is based purely on leadership qualities, not political alignment.
Ofori Amponsah’s comments have since drawn mixed reactions across social media and political circles. While many Ghanaians commended him for his courage and honesty, others accused him of indirectly endorsing the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Supporters from both sides of the political divide have debated his remarks, with some arguing that his statement could spark controversy in an already polarized political climate.
Political analysts suggest that Ofori Amponsah’s stance reflects a growing trend among Ghanaian celebrities who are increasingly distancing themselves from partisan politics. Many entertainers and public figures, they note, are becoming wary of being dragged into political controversies that could divide their fan base or harm their careers.
The veteran musician, however, emphasized that his focus remains on music and nation-building. He believes Ghana’s progress depends on unity, accountability, and the ability of citizens to think beyond political colours. “Ghana needs leaders who can unite the people and move the country forward,” he said.
For now, Ofori Amponsah says he is channeling his energy into music, personal development, and social impact projects — steering clear of the political battles that often dominate national discourse. His declaration has nonetheless sparked an important national conversation about neutrality, integrity, and the role of celebrities in shaping public opinion.
