Police probe death of 16-year-old Siano Soccer Academy player

The Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior footballer of Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, who was allegedly sexually abused by his coach.

According to a statement from the Police Public Affairs Directorate, preliminary investigations revealed that Owusu’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son had fallen ill and died on February 28, 2025. She alleged that, prior to his death, the boy had confided in her that his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually assaulted him.

The case was later transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. The police said suspect Anyass Ibrahim was arrested on November 4, 2025, to assist with investigations. He was interrogated, provided a statement, and subsequently granted bail with a requirement to report regularly to the CID Headquarters.

A review of medical documents submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi indicated that Ransford had been treated for liver and kidney-related conditions before his death.

Police say efforts are ongoing to obtain the official medical reports from both hospitals for confirmation, as previous requests for the records had been declined. The service has since secured a court order to compel the release of the reports.

Investigations into the incident are still underway, police say.
