Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has raised serious concerns over what he describes as President John Dramani Mahama’s “first scandal,” following reports of alleged secret negotiations within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a detailed commentary, Manasseh referred back to an open letter he wrote to Mahama years ago titled “Goldmines and Landmines: Manasseh’s Open Letter to President Mahama.” In that letter, he warned the then-new president about both the immense opportunities and hidden dangers his administration could face, particularly pointing to the potential abuse of the government’s anti-corruption initiative known as Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL). He had cautioned that if transparency and accountability were not upheld, some officials might hijack the initiative to strike shady deals, turning a worthy cause into a source of corruption.
According to Manasseh, those fears appear to be unfolding. His renewed warning came after NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey disclosed that certain senior party figures have allegedly been engaging in backdoor negotiations with individuals from the previous government who are currently under investigation for corruption.
Manasseh described this revelation as proof of his earlier caution, stressing that it threatens both the credibility of the president and the moral foundation of his government. He urged Mahama to act decisively to demonstrate that his commitment to fighting corruption is genuine and not mere rhetoric.
He further noted that how President Mahama handles these allegations will determine the public’s trust in his leadership. According to him, this moment will test whether Operation Recover All Loot becomes a shining example of reform and integrity, or the first major scandal of the new administration — a defining point that could shape Mahama’s political legacy.
Whether coincidence or consequence, Manasseh’s remarks have reignited debate about the president’s ability to maintain discipline within his party and uphold the ethical standards he has promised the Ghanaian people.
