Akwasi Agyei Annim, Western Regional Correspondent for Citi FM and Channel One TV, has won the ‘Best Science and Environment Reporting’ award at the 2025 GJA/KGL National Awards.
The awards ceremony was held on Saturday, November 8, at the Manhyia Palace.
Mr. Agyei Annim’s award-winning story, titled “Jema Resists Galamsey Bribe to Protect Water, Cocoa Resources,” highlighted how the people of Jema in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region resisted attempts to invade their community with illegal mining operations, protecting their water bodies and cocoa farms.
In an exclusive interview with Channel One News, the Chief of Jema, Nana Enoku Annor, revealed that he had turned down nearly one million Ghana cedis in bribes, along with a vehicle and community benefits, to allow galamsey activities.
Jema, a prominent cocoa-growing community, is home to many locals who depend on cocoa farming for their livelihoods. A large sign reading “Jema: No Galamsey” greets visitors entering the town, reflecting the community’s firm stance against illegal mining.
Expressing his excitement about the award, Mr. Agyei Annim promised to continue working diligently to produce impactful journalism.
“What makes this national award special for me is the fact that I received it in Kumasi, where my journalism practice began. Secondly, it’s even more special because it is an award for the environment, which today is so devastated by illegal mining. My story threw light on how a community, Jema, led by its Chief, resisted the entry of illegal mining in the catchment of the community just to protect the environment and the natural resources.
“I hope this award inspires other communities and their leaders to follow the same. So that we can protect the environment, which today is so much threatened by galamsey. I, however, thank God and Channel One TV for making me a part of the team,” he said.
