AMA uncovers fake marriage certificate syndicate, refers case to Police

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has uncovered a suspected syndicate involved in the production and issuance of fake marriage certificates to unsuspecting members of the public.

The fraudulent operation came to light after a client’s marriage certificate — allegedly obtained through the syndicate — was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application process due to inconsistencies. The incident was subsequently reported to the AMA, prompting internal checks.

Confirming the development, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the Assembly had launched an investigation and referred the case to the Ghana Police Service for further action.

He explained that preliminary findings indicated that the individuals involved had been issuing forged documents while posing as officials who facilitate marriage registrations at the AMA.

“The Assembly has detected these fraudulent activities and immediately handed the matter over to the Police for a full-scale investigation,” Mr. Ankrah stated.

He cautioned the public to engage only directly with the AMA’s official Marriage Registry and avoid using intermediaries or unofficial agents when seeking marriage registration services.
