Richie Mensah is the CEO of Lynx Entertainment
The CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, has said success in entertainment is far from guaranteed, as only a small fraction of people who enter the industry ever make it.
Speaking on The Peswa, Richie explained that though entertainment appears glamorous from the outside, it is one of the toughest industries to build a career in.
He said many people are misled by how effortless it looks when an artiste becomes popular overnight, but in reality, success requires years of hard work.
‘It’s selfish to say an artiste shouldn’t leave a record label’ – Richie Mensah
“I know we make entertainment look easy and nice and like, oh, I just sang this song and we just shot a video and I’m an overnight celebrity, but that’s not what it takes. No, you work hard over and over and over again. And entertainment is one of the most stupid, stupid, I say this with passion, one of the most stupid industries,” Richie said.
According to him, the creative industry is unlike most professions because it has an unusually high failure rate.
He noted that only about one percent of entertainers make it to the top, and anyone entering the field with a casual mindset will likely be disappointed.
“You know why? Only 1% of entertainers succeed. So, entertainment is one of the only industries that you need to be in the 1% to succeed,” he added.
Richie went on to compare entertainment to other career fields, such as accounting and farming, to illustrate how success works in the arts.
He said that in most professions, people can still make a decent living even if they are not at the very top, but in entertainment, the gap between success and struggle is wide.
“What I mean by that is you can be an accountant and you are an average accountant, and you make a good living. You can be an average farmer. Maybe you’re not selling to all of Ghana, but you’re selling to your community.
“You make a good living. In entertainment, you are either in the 1% and you are doing very well, or you are making nothing. So, for anyone who is thinking I’m going to come into entertainment and just be mediocre, don’t come. You won’t make it,” Richie cautioned.
