Aburi Girls’ Senior High School has received a new multipurpose basketball court, unveiled and handed over by alumna Madam Aurora Commodore-Toppar, Treasurer of the Ghana Basketball Federation (GBF).

Funded through the support of her family, children, and friends, the project—dubbed the Aurora Legacy Project—is located on the school’s Upper Court.

The facility features a fibreglass surface, breakaway basketball rims, and a durable acrylic coating suited for multiple sports, including basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, and handball. Construction was undertaken by PAK Sports Consult.

The unveiling ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Madam Commodore-Toppar’s father and former Hearts of Oak Board Chairman, Emmanuel Martey Commodore-Mensah, former headmistress Alice Prempeh-Fordjour, and AOGA 2000 Year Group President, Madam Akua Boahemah Owusu Sekyere.

Speaking at the event, Madam Commodore-Toppar—captain of the school’s basketball team that won the Eastern Region Schools’ Basketball Championship in 2000—shared that the project fulfilled a personal pledge she made to God upon completing school.

“The dream was born in 2000… I stood on the staircase to the Lower Court and promised God that if He saw me through my exams, I would honour Him with a pledge,” she recalled.

She began saving towards the project in 2012, accumulating GH¢100,000 before construction commenced. She also announced a Phase Two of the Aurora Legacy Project, which will feature tiered bleacher seats for spectators.

Madam Commodore-Toppar expressed gratitude to all donors and supporters, including Samuel Vasmark, Ben Nunoo Mensah, Madam Naa Kuorkor Nikoi, Kobby Woyome Mensah, Coach Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko (UDS), Col. Samuel Ahmedu (Rtd.), TT Brothers Limited, and customers of ADB, Kaneshie branch.

Alex Kukula, Vice President of the GBF, commended the project, describing it as one of the best courts in the country.

In remarks read on her behalf, Headmistress Madam Wilhelmina Obuobisa-Atakora lauded the facility as a tool to promote fitness, discipline, resilience, and leadership among students.

The event concluded with exhibition matches, where the school’s basketball team triumphed 13–0 over their predecessors, and Team A of the volleyball squad edged Team B by 15–13.
