Parliament of Ghana Releases MPs with the Most Absences—Lawmakers Missing in Action

A new report from Channel One TV has sparked national outrage after revealing the top 10 absentee Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana. The findings, drawn from official parliamentary attendance records, show shocking levels of absenteeism among some of the country’s elected representatives.

Leading the list is Felix Akwetey Nii Okle, MP for Bortianor-Ngleshi Amanfro, who recorded 23 days of absence. He is followed by Joseph Frempong of Nkawkaw with 22 missed sittings, and Ernest Yaw Anim, MP for Kumawu, with 21. Many Ghanaians are now questioning the dedication of these lawmakers at a time when critical national issues demand their attention.

The report also features notable figures such as Col. Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd.) of Jaman South (19 absences), Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance Minister and MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam (17), and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu and Deputy Minority Leader (15). Other names include Blay Nyameke Armah of Sekondi (16), Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie of Effiduase-Asokore (14), Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah of Takoradi (14), and Kwaku Agyeman Kwarteng of Obuasi West (14).

Political analysts say the data reveals a growing disconnect between MPs and their constituents. “How can lawmakers demand accountability when they themselves are absent from duty?” one observer asked. Calls are now mounting for stricter enforcement of parliamentary rules, including possible sanctions for habitual absentees.

Meanwhile, some supporters of the listed MPs have defended them, citing official duties, constituency engagements, or health challenges. Still, many citizens insist that being present in Parliament is a basic duty, not a favor.

As the debate rages on, this report has reignited discussions about transparency, responsibility, and the true meaning of public service. Whether Parliament will take action or quietly move on remains to be seen.
