The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has stated that the illegal mining menace, otherwise known as galamsey, has worsened under the John Dramani Mahama-led government.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, he alleged that some Members of Parliament, national and regional executives, and even local branch officials of the NDC are actively engaged in galamsey operations, which have made it difficult for security agencies to effectively address the issue.

“It is clear that galamsey has become worse under this administration. They have Members of Parliament who belong to the NDC, they have national officials from the NDC, the region, who are involved in galamsey.

“It’s not surprising that the security agencies are struggling to deal with that issue, because when they make efforts, they are threatened by powers that be in this government,” he said.

Justin Kodua stressed that the NPP remains committed to the national interest and is open to dialogue aimed at finding a lasting solution to illegal mining.

“If His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama sees the need and wisdom to reach out to us, we are ever ready for a proper roundtable discussion to deal with this matter once and for all,” he added.

Galamsey remains one of Ghana’s most persistent and complex national challenges.

Despite numerous government interventions, task forces, and policy reforms over the years, it continues to devastate water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves, while posing serious threats to public health and the environment.
