‘Loyalty should be to the party, not an individual’

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise loyalty to the party over personal allegiance to individual presidential hopefuls.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, as monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Dr Adomako Kissi expressed concern over what he described as misplaced loyalty among some party leaders who openly align themselves with particular candidates.

His comments follow the recent decision by fifteen NPP MPs from the Eastern Region to publicly endorse former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of internal party decision-making.

“I think that people should owe allegiance to the party, not to an individual. So, quite frankly, I am troubled when leaders of the party hold allegiance to an individual, even if it is not going to be successful, rather than looking at what is good for the party”, he stated.

According to him, openly backing one candidate at the expense of the party’s collective interest reflects poorly on the leadership qualities of those involved.

He argued that the NPP’s future success depends on unity, not on personal political investments.

Reflecting on the party’s defeat in the 2024 election, Dr Adomako Kissi said the loss was driven by broader governance challenges rather than by individual MPs’ performance.

He noted that parliamentarians are often held responsible by voters for local issues beyond their direct control.

“The MPs take the brunt of everything that happens locally. If the economy is bad, they will blame the MP. If there is corruption, they will vote skirt and blouse”, he said.

He further disputed claims that Dr Bawumia’s showing in the 2024 polls indicated strong national support.

According to him, parliamentary candidates collectively received more votes than the presidential candidate, suggesting that voters distinguished between party and candidate loyalty.

“The real numbers show that voters voted more for the MPs than the candidate. So, when you tell me that the candidate carried the day, it begs the question,” he indicated.

He emphasised that the NPP now needs a presidential candidate capable of uniting the grassroots and energising disillusioned supporters who stayed away from the polls in 2024.

“In any sporting activity, when the coach and captain win, we clap. When they lose, they carry the package”, he stated.
