President Steinmeier visited the Kumasi Technical Institute
The Ashanti Region on Monday, November 3, 2025, played host to a landmark event in the Ghana-Germany partnership, as Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, joined Ghanaian leaders to promote sustainable development and technological innovation.
President Steinmeier, together with Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, and Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, visited the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) to inspect innovative student-led technologies that demonstrate Ghana’s growing capacity in renewable energy and industrial innovation.
The visit also featured a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Centre of Excellence in Green Energy Technology, a transformative €5.6 million project jointly supported by the Government of Germany. The facility aims to advance research, education, and sustainable energy innovation in Ghana.
Dr Amoakohene described the initiative as a “historic investment in Ghana’s technological future.”
“This Centre will not only empower our students with world-class training in renewable energy,” he said, “but will also drive innovation that directly supports Ghana’s green transition and climate resilience.”
He further expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his “transparent and accountable leadership,” which he said has created the enabling environment for meaningful international collaborations.
“We are thankful to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for steering Ghana’s development agenda with integrity and foresight,” Dr Amoakohene noted. “This partnership with Germany is a clear reflection of that vision.”
The Centre of Excellence in Green Energy Technology is expected to serve as a hub for students, researchers, and industry professionals to collaborate on cutting-edge solutions in renewable energy. It forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and combat the effects of climate change.
President Steinmeier reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development priorities.
“Germany values its friendship with Ghana deeply,” he said. “Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen skills training, create opportunities for young people, and contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous future for both our nations.”
Haruna Iddrisu also underscored the importance of vocational and technical education in national development.
“Investing in technical and vocational education is the surest way to equip our youth for the demands of the modern economy,” he emphasized. “This project reflects our dedication to practical skills development and innovation-driven growth.”
The visit by President Steinmeier and the sod-cutting ceremony mark a major milestone in the Ghana-Germany partnership, signaling a renewed commitment to mutual growth through education, research, and green energy innovation.
