Egypt, Zambia victorious but Cote d’Ivoire defeated at FIFA U17 World Cup

Published:

Egypt and Zambia completed big wins at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday, but Cote d’Ivoire will have some work to do to put themselves in the frame for the knockout stages.

Egypt eased to a 4-1 win over Haiti in Group E that leaves them top of the table ahead of Venezuela, who brushed aside England 3-0 in the other match in the pool.

The Egyptians had four different scorers as Belal Attia, Abdelaziz El Zoghby, Hamza Abdelkarim and Omar Kamal all found the back of the net in a strong start for the North Africans.

Egypt next face Venezuela on Friday in what could be a key clash in the group.

Zambia were 3-1 winners over Indonesia in Group H as they came from behind to collect the three points.

They netted three goals in six first half minutes as lanky forward Abel Nyirongo scored a brace and Lukonde Mwale got the other.

Zambia are next in action on Friday when they take on Honduras, who were thumped 7-0 by Brazil in their opening game.

Cote d’Ivoire found the going tough against an efficient Switzerland side, who eased to a 4-1 Group F win. The Ivorians were already 4-0 down when Hubert Yao netted a late consolation goal.

They next take on Mexico on Friday, with the latter having also lost their opening match 2-1 to South Korea.

The top two teams in each group automatically advance to the Round of 32, along with the eight best third-placed teams, providing plenty of opportunity for qualification.
