Oliver Barker-Vormawor challenges Martin Kpebu’s call for scrapping OSP office

Convener of the FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has pushed back against calls by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and others for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to be scrapped, insisting that the anti-graft institution remains crucial to Ghana’s fight against corruption.

In a post on social media on November 1, 2025, Barker-Vormawor said that despite frustrations with the OSP’s pace of work, it was premature and counterproductive to dismantle the office.

“I don’t agree with Martin Kpebu and others that the OSP should be removed. He has two more years to go. He has done extremely well in building the structure of the office after the turbulent Martin Amidu years. Let him finish his term,” Barker-Vormawor stated.

He acknowledged that while there are lessons to be learned from the OSP’s operations, the focus should be on strengthening the institution rather than abandoning it.

“Let us learn together what he didn’t get right. Let us amplify what he got right. We can’t dismantle a key institution because we are frustrated by progress,” he added.

The activist also urged the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to use his remaining two years in office to reflect on his legacy and ensure his tenure advances public confidence in the anti-corruption agenda.

Barker-Vormawor’s comments come on the heels of strong criticism from legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, who has accused the OSP of moving too slowly in its probe into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s alleged involvement in the controversial contract between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Speaking on TV3’s “KeyPoints” programme on November 1, 2025, Kpebu called for urgent action to freeze the former minister’s assets, warning that delays could enable him to conceal or transfer ownership of his properties.

“If by the 14th of this month Ofori-Atta has not been brought before court so that his assets can be frozen, I’ll be the first to present a petition for the OSP’s removal,” Kpebu cautioned.

He claimed that Ofori-Atta holds substantial investments across sectors, including Enterprise Insurance, Data Bank, and various real estate ventures, which must be secured pending investigations.

“Ofori-Atta has many assets in Ghana shares, houses, and other businesses. We need to freeze them before they disappear,” he insisted.
