Attacking and insulting each other over choice of candidates will destroy the NPP

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Amasaman, Akwasi Afrifa-Mensah, has issued a stern warning to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against allowing the upcoming presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026, to create internal divisions within the party.

Afrifa-Mensah emphasised that the NPP has a long history of successfully managing internal elections, noting that the forthcoming primary is neither the first nor will it be the last.

He urged party members to remain united regardless of their preferred candidates, stressing that once a flagbearer is elected, the collective focus must immediately shift to rallying behind that individual to ensure victory in the 2028 general elections.

The former legislator called for discipline among party members, advocating for a campaign marked by decency, respect and a renewed commitment to unity.

Expressing concern over current developments, Afrifa-Mensah lamented the growing tendency among party loyalists to antagonize and insult one another, even to the extent of refusing to communicate, simply because of differing candidate preferences.

He observed that this divisive behavior has unfortunately trickled down from the national leadership to the grassroots level.

“Following January 31, 2026, regardless of who emerges as the winner, we must unify the party and rally solidly behind that person to secure victory in the 2028 general elections. The current internal squabbles are creating needless divisions within the party,” he cautioned.

Afrifa-Mensah further reminded members of the NPP’s strong democratic tradition:

“This primary election is not new to us. We successfully held one during Professor Adu Boahen’s era, twice during former President Kufuor’s tenure, and again during the era of former President Akufo-Addo and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen. I appeal to all supporters to demonstrate love and civility in their language, knowing that after January 31, we must all unite and support our elected candidate,” he appealed.
