The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed deep sadness over the passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the former First Lady of Ghana. She extended her heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family and to all Ghanaians mourning her death, describing the late Nana Konadu as an extraordinary woman whose life and work left a lasting imprint on the nation.
In her tribute, Professor Opoku-Agyemang described the late former First Lady as a remarkable trailblazer who dedicated her life to advancing the cause of women, children, and the vulnerable. She noted that Nana Konadu’s courage, determination, and leadership paved the way for women’s active participation in politics and governance, making her one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s history.
The Vice President also praised her for founding and leading the 31st December Women’s Movement, a landmark initiative that empowered countless women through education, vocational training, and community development programmes. Through this movement, many Ghanaian women gained opportunities to support their families and improve their livelihoods. Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasised that this work reshaped perceptions about women’s roles in society and inspired generations of women to rise into leadership positions.
She further highlighted Nana Konadu’s unwavering support for her husband, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing her as a loyal partner and a source of great strength throughout his political journey. Despite the many challenges she faced, Nana Konadu remained steadfast in her beliefs and fearless in her pursuit of fairness, justice, and equality.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang remarked that Ghana has lost not only a former First Lady but also a symbol of courage, resilience, and national progress. She called on young women to emulate her example by continuing her mission of empowerment, service, and advocacy for gender equality.
The Vice President concluded by praying for comfort for the Rawlings family and all Ghanaians affected by the loss. She said Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of the people and in the many lives she transformed through her vision and dedication.
