Ashaiman residents raise concern over faulty traffic lights

Drivers and commuters in the Ashaiman Municipality have expressed frustration over malfunctioning traffic lights that have turned several intersections into danger zones.

They say the faulty signals are causing confusion and frequent accidents, calling on authorities to take swift action to restore order.

Several major roads in Ashaiman have become hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians as non-functioning traffic lights continue to cause near misses, especially during peak hours.

A visit by Channel One News to parts of the municipality revealed that key traffic lights at the Ashaiman Traffic Light Junction, the Overhead, and Kaketo have all broken down. The situation has led to persistent traffic congestion, often forcing police officers to manually direct vehicles.

Some drivers told Channel One News that the malfunctioning signals have caused multiple accidents and appealed for immediate intervention.

“Accidents happen here often because the traffic lights are not working. Drivers rush to move, and if you’re not careful, there’s a crash. It’s really troubling. We are appealing to the authorities to fix it,” said David Awusi, a commercial driver.

Another driver, Kofi Ampedu, added, “It’s true the traffic lights are not functioning, and that has caused many accidents. We are pleading with the government to repair them as soon as possible.”

Commuters also lamented the worsening congestion, noting that the malfunctioning traffic lights make it difficult for drivers to determine who has the right of way, particularly during rush hours.

The Secretary of the Ashaiman branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, described Ashaiman as a rapidly growing commercial hub and underscored the urgent need for authorities to fix not only the traffic lights but also streetlights and roads in the municipality.

While acknowledging some efforts by the Municipal Assembly, he maintained that much more needs to be done to improve road safety and traffic management in the area.

Responding to the concerns, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, Freeman Tsekpo, explained that rodents have damaged the cables of both streetlights and traffic lights across the municipality. He, however, assured residents that repair works are underway and that all faulty lights will be fixed by the end of December.
