The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has paid glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a trailblazer in women’s empowerment and one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s history.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo, on Saturday, October 25, the MP said Nana Konadu’s contributions to national development, particularly in advancing the role of women, remain unmatched.
“Her impact you would want to say remains immeasurable, particularly in the area of women’s empowerment. I don’t think that there’s any First Lady in the history of this country or any woman in the history of this country since Yaa Asantewaa that has led women’s empowerment in the manner in which Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings did,” Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah eulogised the late Nana Konadu.
He noted that Nana Konadu redefined the role of Ghana’s First Ladies, modernising it into what it has become today.
“In fact, if you take it from the perspective of First Ladies, she modernised it and gave us the role as it has come to be known. In the history of this country, I again dare say that there hasn’t been any First Lady who has been as impactful as Nana Konadu was,” he said.
He added that Nana Konadu rose to prominence at a time when education was largely considered a male preserve.
“Nana Konadu came to the scene at a time when the general notion was that education was for men and not women. It was rare to see women taking a keen interest in education. Nana Konadu led the empowerment of uneducated women by equipping them with skills,” he stated.
According to him, Nana Konadu’s initiatives equipped uneducated women with skills, giving them economic independence and dignity.
“She was quite innovative. We need to be candid regardless of our political differences; her contributions have been very impactful,” he remarked.
