Ghana may need to consider constructing a new chamber for Parliament if the number of Members of Parliament (MPs) is increased from the current 276, Speaker Alban Kingsford Bagbin has stated.

Addressing the third meeting of the first session of the ninth Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Speaker emphasized that the existing chamber cannot accommodate additional MPs.

“Before the number of MPs which stands at 276 increases, as a nation we must start looking for another Chamber for Parliament…,” he said.

The current parliamentary meeting had been postponed earlier to allow for the completion of renovations in the August chamber, which included replacing furniture and two framed kente cloths in the debating area.

During this session, Parliament is set to deliberate on several key issues, including the proposed revocation of LI 2462, which grants the President the authority to approve mining in forest reserves—a move aimed at combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The Appointments Committee is also expected to announce a date for the vetting of Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been nominated to serve as the substantive Chief Justice following the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

Additionally, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson will present the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.

The Majority will see the addition of two new legislators, Bernard Bediako Baidoo for Akwatia and Professor Alidu Seidu for Tamale South, who will be sworn in as MPs-elect.
