Accra, Oct. 21, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants to conduct issue-based campaigns ahead of the January 31, 2026, primaries.
Speaking at a breakfast meeting with the five aspirants at his private residence in Nima, the former President encouraged them to focus their messages on their visions for the party and the country.
“He encouraged them (the aspirants) to conduct their campaigns in a healthy, issue-based manner that focuses on presenting their visions to the party delegates,” a statement issued by his office said.
President Akufo-Addo emphasised that his priority was to see a cohesive and credible process that would energise the NPP for the next general elections. He expressed appreciation to the aspirants for their “shared commitment to the collective good and future prospects of the party.”
The meeting was convened to foster unity and underscore the importance of a united front ahead of the primaries, the statement added.
The aspirants assured the former President of their commitment to maintaining a healthy but competitive atmosphere and pledged to support the eventual winner to preserve party unity.
Present at the meeting were Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders; Mr Danquah Smith Buttey, Acting National Chairman; Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary; Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader; and Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, former Chief of Staff.
The five presidential hopefuls included Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The NPP’s presidential primaries will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
