Small Scale Miners’ taskforce destroys over 120 illegal mining equipment

A taskforce deployed by the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has destroyed more than 120 pieces of mining equipment used by illegal miners to pollute major rivers in parts of the Ashanti Region.

The exercise, which the Association says supports the government’s ongoing anti-galamsey operations, has been ongoing for the past two weeks.

The taskforce began its operations in the Ahafo Ano South West District, where illegal mining had heavily polluted the Mankran and Offin Rivers, before moving to Amadaa and Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District.

During the raids, several miners fled their sites, abandoning excavators, chanfan platforms, engines, and other mining accessories, which were later destroyed by the team.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, the Association’s President, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to sustaining the operation to protect water bodies and farmlands.

Mr. Peprah noted that the Association’s taskforce is complementing the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining nationwide. He added that the group will also continue educating mining communities on the need to support the national fight against galamsey.
