Ghanaians frustrated by poor governance, not NDC–NPP duopoly — Beyuo

Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Prof. Titus Beyuo, has rejected claims that Ghanaians are disillusioned with the long-standing dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the country’s politics.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, Prof. Beyuo argued that assertions by the newly formed United Party (UP Plus) — that Ghanaians are tired of the NDC–NPP duopoly — are misplaced and based on a flawed premise.

“The last advice I will give is that when you set a question wrongly and you answer it, you may answer it correctly, but it will still be wrong, and the wrong question is that Ghanaians are fed up with the duopoly,” he said.

Prof. Beyuo explained that while citizens may be frustrated with poor governance, corruption, and nepotism, that frustration does not necessarily translate into a rejection of the two main political parties.

“Ghanaians may be fed up with bad governance, nepotism, corruption among the elite — governance that does not work in the interest of the people — but they are not fed up with the governance that brings hope and development. That’s why they can give someone a two-thirds overwhelming majority in Parliament. Are Ghanaians really fed up with this type of government? I don’t think so,” he added.

His comments come in response to UP Plus, led by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, which has positioned itself as a centrist alternative to the NPP and NDC, pledging to “break the duopoly” that has shaped Ghana’s Fourth Republic since 1992.
