Two people are currently in custody of the Akim Oda Divisional Police Command in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region for their alleged involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The two were caught in the act during an operation jointly carried out by personnel from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Municipal Assembly Taskforce.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Solomon Brako Kusi, the operation is part of continuous efforts to combat illegal mining activities (galamsey) within the Birim Central Municipality by the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC). The operation took place just days after the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted a similar raid to clamp down on perpetrators engaging in galamsey along the Birim River.

The team successfully dismantled two changfan machines used in illegal mining operations. The two suspects, who could not escape arrest, are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Chairman of the Birim Central Municipal Security Council, Solomon Brako Kusi, commended the collaborative efforts of all security agencies involved in the fight and reiterated MUSEC’s commitment to ensuring the protection of the environment, the restoration of degraded lands, and sustaining the fight against galamsey within the municipality.
