Political Analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has argued that the newly rebranded United Party (UP), led by Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, could become a safe haven for disgruntled members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, October 16, Dr. Asante Otchere cautioned that if the NPP disintegrates after its fiercely contested presidential primaries slated for January 31, many who fall out could join the UP, which he described as the “nearest home.”
He further stressed that many “Gen Z” supporters of the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, who are no longer drawn to the party and are currently shifting to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), could also easily align themselves with the UP.
“I am well informed that the Gen Z of today, especially in the Ashanti Region, are no longer getting attracted to the NPP, which in itself is another problem that they would have to work on. These people could easily identify themselves with UP, but what I know is that they are moving in groups into the NDC. It appears that is where the attraction is for now so the NPP is at the crossroads. Now they are even supposed to conduct a presidential primaries, and I hope they do not disintegrate because if they do, the UP will become a safe haven for such a category of people, and that in itself could create more problems for the NPP,” he warned.
Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister, resigned from the NPP in 2023 to form the Movement for Change — a party he has now rebranded as the United Party.
According to him, the rebrand represents a new dawn for Ghanaian politics, enhancing accountability, strengthening the fight against corruption, and providing a credible alternative to the winner-takes-all system.
