3rd National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu
The 3rd National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu, has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over what he describes as their failure to effectively tackle illegal mining (galamsey), which has resulted in the pollution of water bodies and contamination of food crops in the country.
According to him, since the NDC came to power, he has stopped eating vegetables, including salads, kontomire and okro, because he believes most of them are grown using polluted water.
He claimed that the activities of illegal miners have severely affected water bodies, leading to the contamination of vegetables irrigated with such water.
Speaking in an interview shared on social media, Alhaji Masawudu said, “The dealings of galamsey have contaminated our vegetables, so, I have stopped eating salad, kontomire and even okro. These days, if I fry eggs, I just use salt. I really like eggs, so sometimes I can fry about ten eggs and eat them.”
Meanwhile, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the NDC, has defended the government over what many have described as unfulfilled promises.
Tensions between NDC’s Azorka and NPP’s Chairman Buga heightens with new threats
According to him, although several Ghanaians have expressed disappointments with the government’s slow pace in tackling illegal mining (galamsey) and unemployment, progress is being made, but the results will take time to manifest.
He made these remarks in a video posted by TV3 and sighted by GhanaWeb, where he addressed a gathering on the matter.
“People have been blaming the government for our promise to control galamsey, which we are yet to deliver on. They are also blaming the government for our promise to create jobs for all the youth. Work has started, but it hasn’t shown results yet,” Asiedu Nketiah said.
To emphasise his point, he used an analogy, comparing development progress to the natural process of childbirth.
“I just want to remind everybody that however hard you try; you cannot produce a child in less than nine months. If you marry today and people tease you to have a baby immediately, can you? No matter how hard you pray or work, it still takes nine months for a child to be born. Some of these issues also have their own timelines for maturity,” he explained.
He maintained that the results of the government’s fight against galamsey will become evident in the improvement of water bodies and forest reserves but called on Ghanaians to exercise patience as the process unfolds.
