Professor Peter Quartey is an Economist
Economist Professor Peter Quartey has expressed optimism that Ghana will outperform the economic growth projections set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank for the 2025 fiscal year.
According to him, Ghana’s economic resilience presents an opportunity to deliver stronger results than those forecasted by the two international institutions.
Speaking in an interview, Professor Quartey emphasised that economic expansion must not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.
He stressed the need to safeguard the country’s natural resources and ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into broader trade and economic policies.
MF projects 4% growth for Ghana in 2025
“Our environmental growth accounting has to be taken seriously. You can grow by 10 percent, but if you destroy your environment, pollute water bodies, and poison your food sources, it is not something to celebrate,” he cautioned.
He further argued that fiscal discipline and structural reforms could unlock higher growth, noting that international institutions often provide conservative estimates to avoid overly ambitious outlooks.
“But as a country, we have often exceeded their projections, all things being equal, and I believe we will surpass the 4% they are projecting,” he added.
