The framed Kente behind the Speaker of Parliament were gifted by the Asantehene
The two vibrant, beautifully designed, and framed kente fabrics that adorn the walls of Ghana’s legislature and are displayed on the floor of Parliament, just behind the Speaker’s seat, are said to have been gifted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
These details were brought to light when a delegation from Parliament, led by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, visited the Otumfuo at the Manhyia Palace.
Why the Asantehene cannot be called ‘Nana Otumfuo’
Addressing the Asantehene, in a video seen by GhanaWeb and shared by the Asante Nation on October 15, 2025, Asiamah stated that the fabrics were a kind gesture from the Asantehene.
He disclosed that the renovations that have taken place at the Parliament building have necessitated the need to replace the fabric.
However, he said that since the fabrics were gifted to the chamber by Otumfuo, the decision to change them cannot be made without his knowledge.
He added that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has requested new fabrics from Otumfuo to decorate the newly renovated chamber.
“… Since Otumfuo’s son became the Speaker of Parliament, a lot of changes have been taking place. One of these was the renovation of the Parliament building after a decision to construct a new one resulted in public uproar. We have renovated the building and it will soon be reopened for all to see the changes.

“Everything has been newly made, including the tables and chairs. However, one thing left to change is the old framed kente displayed behind the Speaker’s seat. It was gifted to Parliament by Otumfuo, so we cannot change it without his knowledge and consent. Today, the Right Honorable Speaker is humbly requesting for a new one beautifully crafted like the old ones,” he said in Twi.
