80-year-old widow cries for help

An 80-year-old widow, Nma Kombozie Jakare, from the Wa Municipal area in the Upper West Region, is struggling to survive in a life-threatening, dilapidated mud house.

Nma, who resides in her late father’s house at Mangu, a densely populated community, has been living in poverty since the death of her husband.

With no relatives to rely on, her only companion is her grandchild, but life has become unbearable for both of them.

According to a report by metrotvonline.com on October 15, 2025, the elderly woman has resorted to begging on the streets to feed herself and her granddaughter after several unsuccessful attempts to get registered under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

“I have resorted to begging in order to feed myself and my granddaughter after the attempts to get registered under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP),” the report said.

Her living conditions are dire.

The mud house she occupies has a leaking roof, poor ventilation, and is infested with mosquitoes, making it extremely unsafe and uncomfortable, especially given her advanced age and poor eyesight.

The situation worsens during the rainy season, when she uses bowls, pans, and cooking pots to collect rainwater seeping through the roof.

Nma is appealing to government, particularly the Wa Municipal Assembly, as well as kind-hearted individuals and philanthropists, to come to her aid with a decent accommodation and help her get enrolled onto the LEAP programme to alleviate her suffering
