Why the AG is taking his time on ORAL cases

The Member of Parliament for Yendi, Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, has explained that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, is following due processes to ensure credible and successful prosecutions in corruption-related cases emerging from the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee report.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, he said cases from the ORAL Committee are not being rushed because the Attorney General must independently verify the findings before heading to court.

He noted that taking immediate legal action, based solely on the committee’s report, could result in weak cases and possible embarrassment for the state.

“ORAL did its work, and handed over reports to the president, who also gave it to the Attorney General’s office.

“No Attorney General worth his salt will get up and take that document, run into court. That would be a recipe for disaster. Many people have a complete misunderstanding of the whole concept,” he said.

The lawmaker emphasised that the quality of investigations is crucial to achieving successful prosecutions.

“If someone else did the investigations, I need to review how it was done, because in our criminal jurisprudence, the investigation process is the heart of everything,” he explained.

He acknowledged that the public’s impatience with the pace of action is understandable, especially given the high expectations before and after the elections.

“The public is justified in their concerns, but as a government, we must explain that proper legal procedure takes time. It’s better to take time and get the work done well than to rush and lose in court,” he added.

Abdul Fatawu further entreated the public to trust the process, noting that the government’s focus is not merely on prosecution, but on ensuring that justice is achieved through credible, evidence-based actions that reinforce public confidence in Ghana’s legal system.

The ORAL Committee was established on December 18, 2024, by President John Dramani Mahama.

It was tasked with identifying and retrieving looted state assets.
