Minority lays blame at government feet over unpaid nurses salaries

The Minority in Parliament has asked the government to ensure the immediate payment of over six thousand nurses and midwives who have been working without pay for the past 10 months.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, rejected attempts by the government to blame the plight of the affected health workers on the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He argued that the government’s claim that the financial clearance given by the erstwhile government had expired, requiring the current administration to seek Cabinet approval for a new clearance to pay the affected workers was unfounded.

“It appears that being reasonable to them over the period, they are taking them for granted, and that is why we are trying to come in to get the public to know that there is no need for Cabinet to approve anything. Again, there’s no need for this clearance. The government should come and tell them that there was no clearance, that it expired, and they should tell us if indeed, in public administration, there has not been a clearance which has expired and had been extended. It’s not news in this country or any other country,” the Ranking Member said.

The Minority stated that the government’s failure to pay the workers was purely a political decision, which they have sought to blame on the previous administration.

The address by the Minority comes on the back of a press conference by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, where he announced Cabinet approval for the payment of the affected nurses effective November.

Coming after months of protests by the health workers demanding their salaries, the government has maintained that the situation was occasioned by the expiration of the financial clearance issued by the erstwhile government before the current administration assumed office.
