Michael Kwadwo Peprah is the President of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association
The President of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, has clarified the reasons behind GoldBod’s success in gold trading in Ghana.
According to him, GoldBod’s achievements are largely the result of the efforts of licensed small-scale miners, not illegal mining operations, commonly known as galamsey, as has been widely speculated.
Speaking in an interview on an Accra FM, monitored by GhanaWeb Business, Peprah explained that GoldBod operates under strict rules and regulations, which empower it as the sole entity responsible for the buying and assaying of gold in the country.
GoldBod doesn’t buy gold from illegal miners – Sammy Gyamfi
“There are over 2,000 licensed miners in the country from whom GoldBod purchases gold. These are the norms. Galamsey operators can’t even identify GoldBod’s licensed offices because they simply don’t know them. With GoldBod’s traceability system, such individuals would be interrogated and asked to provide their operating license and location,” he said.
He further noted that with GoldBod’s legal backing, illegal miners are unable to sell their gold to any authorized body.
“Those operating on waterbodies usually sell their gold to foreigners. It would be very difficult for galamseyers to sell their gold to GoldBod,” he stated.
