The Bank of Ghana will mark the 60th anniversary of the Cedi with a national launch ceremony on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

The event, themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” will be graced by President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.

The central bank noted that the anniversary commemorates the adoption of the Cedi on July 19, 1965, which symbolised Ghana’s economic independence and transition from colonial rule.

Over six decades, the Cedi has undergone reforms, redesigns, and policy evolutions, serving not only as a monetary instrument but also as a national emblem of resilience, self-determination, and progress.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 celebration aims to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, educate the public on the history and future of the currency, and foster pride in Ghana’s financial and cultural identity.

The initiative will also support the Bank’s Clean Note Campaign and encourage the next generation to appreciate and safeguard the integrity of the Cedi.

The Bank of Ghana said the celebrations will provide a strategic platform to commemorate the evolution of the Cedi, strengthen policy literacy, and promote national confidence in the country’s currency.

Flagship activities planned for the anniversary include:

• National Launch Ceremony at the AICC.

• Cedi Van Regional Roadshow for exhibitions, education, and outreach across the country.

• Public education campaigns on clean note handling, currency security features, and the evolution of Ghana’s currencies since independence.

• Currency Conference bringing together central banks, academia, and the private sector.

• Youth competitions in music, art, essays, and quizzes to raise awareness among students.
