Award-winning journalist Humu-Khrusum Tahiru of A1 Radio, who recently secured the coveted Female Journalist of the Year and Gender Reporter of the Year awards at the 4th Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, has announced she will be stepping back from competition to focus on mentoring the next generation of women in broadcasting.

Tahiru, a highly respected figure in the Upper East media landscape, was recognized at the 2024 ceremony for her compelling gender-focused reporting, continuing her legacy of excellence after winning the Best Female Journalist of the Year in the 2024 awards (held in 2025).

The news of her competitive hiatus was shared in a reflective and powerful social media post, where she chronicled her 16-year journey in radio and her deep-seated commitment to giving back to her community.

“My job is done with the GJA Awards in the region. All I wanted to do is to set the stage and encourage other women to participate,” Tahiru wrote on her Facebook page.

“Next year, you wouldn’t see my name on the list, but I can assure you, I will work behind the scenes with Women in Broadcasting to give you more women contenders.”

Her impactful documentary that secured the Gender Reporter award focused on the challenges faced by female aspirants in the District Assembly Elections, a piece that the Upper East GJA commended for “highlighting the real issue on the ground.”

From Attachee to Trailblazer

Tahiru’s journey, which began with her first words on radio sixteen years ago, is a testament to perseverance and mentorship. She recalled joining the newly established A1 Radio in September 2009 as an attachee.

“A passion was ignited in teacher training college through campus news network. That passion needed to be nurtured,” she wrote.

She credited Sophia Akumi of GBC, Ura Radio, with securing her entry into A1 Radio, stating, “She held my hands, lobbied and made sure I got admitted to join team A1 Radio. She gave me an opportunity to chase my dreams. I am forever indebted to her.”

Throughout her career, Tahiru has demonstrated remarkable versatility, having confidently hosted “almost every show on A1 Radio, from sports, politics, entertainment, name it,” a versatility she proudly describes, adapting the popular saying: “They say; jack of all trades master of none. In my case, I am a senior apprentice of all, and we all know what they do, they are your sure bet in the absence of the master.”

A Family’s Inspiration

Tahiru attributes her work ethic and drive for excellence to her upbringing, inspired by her parents. She noted the sacrifices of her mother and the empowering words of her father, who encouraged her to “count myself in no matter the number of times I was counted out in any space.”

As she transitions her focus to mentorship, Tahiru expressed immense gratitude to A1 Radio, which she calls “my favorite place, it is home, it is a huge part of who I am today,” and to her family, stating her late father’s prayers, her mother as her “pillar,” and her siblings and supporters who are “rooting for me to succeed in diverse spaces.”

By dedicating her energy to fostering female talent, Humu-Khrusum Tahiru is ensuring that her legacy of impactful, gender-sensitive journalism will continue to shape public discourse and champion development in the Upper East Region for years to come.
