Togolese footballer, Samuel Asamoah has suffered a broken neck following a collision with a pitch-side advertising board in China.

The serious injury occurred during a match between his second-tier Chinese club, Guangxi Pingguo, and Chongqing Tonglianglong on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

The 31-year-old collided with an LED advertising panel after being shoved by midfielder Zhang Zhixiong, who was issued a yellow card as a caution.

The Chinese club announced that Asamoah is at risk of “high-level paraplegia,” indicating multiple fractures in his neck and extensive nerve damage.

Guangxi Pingguo also confirmed that Asamoah has undergone surgery and is currently in stable condition as he begins the recovery process.

“His recovery progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations,” the club said, as reported by the BBC.

Asamoah, who spent most of his career in Belgium before moving to China in 2024, has made six appearances for Togo and plays a key role for his club.
