Eric Opoku is the Minister of Food and Agriculture
Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has stated that he will never shy away from serving the nation in the highest office of the presidency.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on October 6, 2025, Opoku explained that, despite his long years of service and experience in public office, he remains committed to serving Ghana in any capacity, including the presidency, if given the opportunity.
“When we were young and in school, you wouldn’t know you were a good player until a teacher asked you to play a certain position. Once given the chance, you would realise your potential,” he said.
He recounted his extensive experience in public service, saying he has held several positions that have prepared him for higher office.
“Since the beginning of my political career, I have never gone after a big position. I started from the unit committee level. I have served as an assembly member, area council secretary, deputy regional minister and municipal and district chief executive.
“I have also been a Member of Parliament for over 20 years, served as Bono Ahafo Regional Minister, Ashanti Regional Minister, and today I am a Cabinet Minister in charge of Food and Agriculture,” he recounted.

Opoku added that, like the biblical Joseph who was elevated for his service in ensuring food abundance, he would be ready to lead if called upon.
“When Joseph brought an abundance of food to his people, they made him a king. So, if I am able to do my work well and one day Ghanaians give me the mandate, I will never run away. I will serve my people,” he declared.
Meanwhile, several figures within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are being speculated as potential contenders for the party’s flagbearership when President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure ends in 2028.
Some of the prominent names include Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education; NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah; Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, among others.
