Ghana’s observance of National Sanitation Day has reignited national conversations around civic responsibility, leadership accountability, and the urgent need for a cultural shift in environmental cleanliness.
Leading the charge in the Eastern Region is its Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who personally joined a desilting exercise in Koforidua’s central business district.

She called on all 33 Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to make sanitation a top priority, warning that cleanliness will now serve as a key performance indicator in evaluating their effectiveness.
Flanked by the New Juaben South MCE, Ransford Owusu Boakye, they supervised the clearing of choked drains, urging the public, technocrats, and civil servants to support the government’s sanitation drive.
A similar scene is playing out in the Greater Accra Region, where in Ablekuma West, the MP Rev. Kweku Addo, and MCE George Kpakpo Allotey are present for a community clean-up.
In the Northern Region, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive also led a clean-up exercise alongside the Municipal Coordinating Director, security agencies, and party members.
However, citizen participation remain noticeably low, raising concerns about public apathy toward such national initiatives.
