‘Fine event, ruined by propaganda’ – Miracles tackles Mahama after CSO meeting

Former presidential staffer and spokesperson for former vice-president Dr Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has accused the government of selectively publishing data about Ghana’s water bodies while concealing the true scale of the crisis.

In a post made on X on October 3, 2025, Aboagye noted that the Water Resources Commission has monitored 41 water bodies since 2005, yet only 6 of them were highlighted, leaving the remaining 35, which, he claims, are in a worse condition.

“All you have done is invite others to prove to you that, out of the 41 water bodies being tracked by the water resources commission, 35 of them are in a worse situation now than in the past, and that is why you refuse to show the data,” he wrote.

He claimed that there is a rising contamination in the Ayensu River, where turbidity jumped from 14,000 NTU in 2024 to 94,000 NTU currently.

He also dismissed claims that turbidity alone defines quality, stressing that water quality indices, which combine multiple measures, are the proper gauge.

“The central region is in crisis as we speak, the turbidity level in the Ayensu River has risen from 14,000 NTU in 2024 to 94,000 NTU as at now. Why isn’t that part of the rivers you displayed today?

“Water turbidity levels are not the measure for water quality. The true measure of water quality is the WATER QUALITY index which uses turbidity levels, nutrients and two other elements to determine the purity of the water levels,” he added.

Aboagye accused the government of engaging in propaganda, saying that spotlighting only the six better-off rivers is a deliberate attempt to mislead the populace.

He also renewed calls for the government to fulfil its anti-galamsey promises and curb mining destruction, especially in regions like the Central Region, which he said is already in crisis.

“Nice stakeholder engagement organised, very progressive conversation and then out of no where “boom” you start mounting pressure on your own selves about some progress you claim you are making even in the face of contrary facts.

“The attempt by this government to use 6 water bodies out of 41 to gaslight the entire country is not only laughable but unnecessary. Fine event but they are spoiling it with propaganda. I mean how??” he wrote.

His intervention comes in the wake of a high-profile meeting between President John Mahama and civil society organizations (CSOs) on October 3, in Accra to address illegal mining and environmental concerns.
