File photo: A dispute over a reported GH¢12,000 autopsy fee has led to the abandonment of the body
A family in Kwahu Behenase, in the Eastern Region, has refused to claim the body of their 52-year-old relative, who was allegedly murdered.
This is due to a dispute over a reported GH¢12,000 autopsy fee.
The deceased’s brother, Agya Noah, stated that the family is financially constrained and can only afford GH¢2,000.

He explained that their inability to pay the full amount has led to a standoff with the Nkawkaw Police Command.
According to a report by Adomonline on Saturday, October 4, 2025, the Nkawkaw District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Victor Kwakye, denied that the police had quoted any specific fee to the family.
“The family was informed about the requirement for an autopsy, but no specific amount was mentioned by the police,” the report said
He clarified that under Ghanaian law; an autopsy must be conducted before a deceased person’s body can be released to the family.
Chief Superintendent Kwakye advised the family to negotiate directly with medical professionals to review the cost, given their financial difficulties.
