Stellar Kumedzro is the Volta Regional Environmental Health Officer
Stellar Kumedzro, the Volta Regional Environmental Health Officer, has cautioned residents of the region to properly treat their drinking water, particularly by boiling, to prevent typhoid fever and other waterborne diseases.
She explained that the ongoing shortage of water supply from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has forced many households to resort to unsafe sources, increasing the risk of contamination.
In an interview with the GNA, Madam Kumedzro disclosed that typhoid cases were on the rise in both the Volta and Oti Regions, with Oti alone recording over 10,000 cases this year.
Recent screening of food vendors also revealed a worrying surge in infections in the Ho Municipality.
“When someone is diagnosed with typhoid, it means the person has consumed contaminated food or water. No one would deliberately do that, so it tells us that the water we drink and the food we eat are not safe,” she stressed.
She urged residents to ensure that all water collected for household use is either boiled or disinfected before consumption.
Meanwhile, Regional Health Officials and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) have also advised food vendors to cook meals thoroughly, keep food covered, and avoid selling on bare floors to protect public health.
