File photo of a worried woman
Dear GhanaWeb,
I’m a 25-year-old woman working in the home of a very wealthy man. He lives with his wife and their two children.
I work as their chef, I plan and cook all their meals. I’ve been with them for over a year now.
Honestly, working there has been smooth. My boss is a kind man. He sometimes gifts me money, and my salary is quite good too.
However, I don’t know why his wife doesn’t like me. Lately, she has been monitoring my every move. Maybe she suspects I’m having an affair with her husband simply because he is kind to me.
She constantly tries to find faults in everything I do, but my boss usually defends me whenever he’s around. It’s frustrating at times, but I’ve had to endure it because I really want this job.
I feel she should know the kind of man she married by now. He is naturally kind and generous to everyone, even strangers.
So why should she suddenly feel threatened just because he gives me gifts and money?
He treats all his staff like family. He often invites me to join them at the dining table, and even when they’re watching movies as a family, he calls me to join them.
Two days ago, I was about to call them downstairs for dinner when I overheard the wife telling her husband to fire me. I panicked.
I kept asking myself what I had done wrong. She said she was uncomfortable with how freely I move around the house, how I act like a family member, and how her husband buys me gifts.
My boss calmly explained to her that he treats me that way because I’m a good person. I even found out that he once tested me to see if I would steal from him, and I didn’t. So he sees no reason to fire me.
She then asked if he was sleeping with me. His only response was, “I’m disappointed in you for thinking that.” I quickly went back to the kitchen before they noticed I had overheard everything.
Since then, I’ve not been myself.
I honestly love this job, it’s the only place I’ve ever worked where I’ve felt truly comfortable. But now, it feels like my job is at risk.
What can I do to make the wife like me? I want her to know that I’m worthy of this job. Even their children love me because I take good care of them.
Please, what should I do now?
