The race for the Tamale Central parliamentary seat has further narrowed, as a second aspirant has bowed out of the contest, Citi News has gathered.
Alhaji Ibrahim Seidu, an engineer by profession, has withdrawn from the race, joining Halid Abdul Rauf, a lawyer and National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), who earlier stepped down.
Sources close to Alhaji Seidu indicate that his decision was influenced by the unusually high number of contestants who picked up nomination forms on the first day — signalling an intensely competitive contest ahead.
His withdrawal reduces the confirmed aspirants to 12, down from the initial 14 who expressed interest at the start of the process.
According to the Electoral Commission’s timetable, nominations close today, Sunday, August 24, 2025, while filing is set for Thursday, August 28, 2025, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Tamale Central by-election was triggered by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament and Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate in honour of the late MP.
