New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong has come under heavy criticism on social media after making comments perceived as tribal attacks against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking to party supporters on August 23, the former Agriculture Minister suggested that the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat was partly influenced by what he described as “tribal dynamics” linked to Dr Bawumia’s candidacy.

He argued that unlike former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, who enjoyed strong backing in northern constituencies, Dr Bawumia was undermined by long-standing rivalries between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities.

Acheampong further stated that these divisions contributed to the NPP’s poor performance in the northern belt, including the Upper East, Upper West, Oti, and Northern Regions.

His remarks have since been condemned by many Ghanaians as both divisive and unnecessary, with critics warning that such rhetoric risks deepening political and ethnic tensions.

On social media, reactions have been swift and pointed. Some accused him of seeking to scapegoat tribal politics for the party’s defeat rather than addressing broader issues.

One user remarked that “one of the reasons why the NPP lost the elections was because Bryan Acheampong was busy trying to use his position as a minister to shamelessly acquire state assets.”

Others dismissed his comments as a distraction, insisting that voters are more concerned with governance and accountability than ethnic allegiances.
