Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, an energy expert and former Energy Advisor to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stressed the need for Ghanaian presidents and other government officials to reduce international travels.

In a Joy Prime interview on Saturday, August 23, 2025, he called for a review of presidential travels and official allowances.

“We spent over GH¢780 million in one day to elect a president in 2024, that is how much our election cost in 2024, the specific amount is GH¢786 million, but it’s too much of a problem when that person we spent GH¢786 million to elect a president and he has to travel and we have to give him some level of luxury. Our presidents travel too much”, he noted.

Nsafoah Poku criticized the extensive travel undertaken by parliamentarians, ministers, and other officials as well.

“We should have less travel time for parliamentarians, the MPs, the ministers, everybody travels too much in this country, it’s too much, we should lessen, for me, five travels a year”, he added.

His comments come in the wake of demands for the government to urgently procure a modern state aircraft to guarantee the safety of the president.
