Car dealer in court over stolen car from Canada
A popular car dealer, Dennis Osei Adu Gyamfi, also known as Nana Kwame, has been dragged to court for allegedly receiving a stolen vehicle, contrary to Section 146 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The Accra-based dealer is accused of dishonestly receiving a Mercedes Benz E350, with chassis number WDDZF8EB4LA725362, valued at GH¢700,000.
According to the prosecution, Gyamfi knew the car had been stolen in Canada and shipped to Ghana, but went ahead to sell it to an unsuspecting buyer.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Canada on April 27, 2023. The accused allegedly imported it into Ghana in June 2023, three months later. He then handed the car over to his associate, Joseph Mensah, in Kumasi for sale.
On July 13, 2023, the vehicle was sold to John Anapana for GH¢560,000, who later resold it to Abraham Sackey. After using it for five months, Sackey also sold the vehicle to another dealer, Ernest Owusu.
Eventually, a businessman from Benin, Derrick Fredrick Senan Togban, who resides in Accra, purchased the vehicle through a swap deal involving his Mercedes Benz E300 valued at GH¢300,000, plus an additional GH¢400,000 in cash, bringing the total value to GH¢700,000.
Togban registered the car in his name with the number plate GR 8760-2025. However, his plans to drive it to his hometown in Benin turned sour when he was arrested by Interpol in Togo.
The vehicle was subsequently confiscated after Togban was informed that it had been stolen from Canada.
Further investigations by Ghanaian authorities led to the arrest of Gyamfi and three other individuals.
During interrogation, Gyamfi reportedly admitted that his name appeared on the importation documents but denied any knowledge of importing a stolen vehicle.
He has since been formally charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property. When he appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful, he pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢1 million. He is expected to reappear on September 23, 2025.
